It worked fine here with MD-II (text + headers shown), both with "Show
significant headers" and "Show all headers" selected.

Hi all.
      This is a subject that does come up fairly often i know but i
think keeping the dd edition of AF is important in the current climat.
I know that Ben and many others would like to see the back of the
floppy version,and so would i.But until new machines are here (and i
don't want to hear any rollocks about them coming.Only physical
evidence will do) the market needs to attract as many users as poss.
There are 1-2 million miggy's in the uk alone (maybe more),if dormant
owners pass AF in smithy's they're much more likely to purchase
the dd version.Like i did last year after two years absence from the
scene. When and if we move from the classic line to the next gen then
Ben should go cd only. Sorry if this subject as been covered prev.

Allright everyone, Ive got a small problem.

   Ive got a an A1200 +4meg with WB3.0 and
a small 100 mb HD & 2x CDrom With sqirrel.

 Ive just bought OS3.5 And want to completely remove
 all traces of my old Amiga S/w from My HD
 (including the old OS) and install the New os.
 (But being a novice I dunno if I can delete everything
 first B4 I start the Upgrade )

 Also Im want to Tower my Miggy up and
 Attach it to a Monitor increase the memory
 and add an accelerator .. But again the
 choices are bewildering
 (what do you lot recomend)

 Im doing this because after spending 1,000's
 on my PC I cannot afford the decent software to
 do what I want/ Could do anyway on my amiga :-(

Those are quite amazing bargains...

It's just the way it's always been, but if you think stuff in England is
overpriced, try buying the same stuff in Northern Ireland...some of the
prices here are horrendous.  1-2 years ago I got a friend in England to buy
me a 32mb SIMM for my A1200, it cost 48 quid at the time, the same SIMM
over here would've cost about 75-80 quid, possibly more.  Not to mention
the P&P charges usually double for ever here (in every sense, "next day"
for NI usually means "next day give or take four").

I read your post with great interest and agree with it for the most part,
but I have to disagree with you on your first point.  I wouold say the
single most contributing factor towards the decline of the Amiga is the
fact that the majority of people always like the most powerful thing they
can get there hands on.  I would say a major proportion of people left the
amiga market when they found that a pc could do much better at games/apps
then their beloved a500.  Think also of the rise in the use of computers in
the office.  10 years ago alot of businesses might have had one or two
computers, now nearly everyone has a computer on thier desk at work.  If
everyone had an a4000 at work, I garuntee that everyone would have an
a4000 at home!  So the situation we have is that the games fanatics put
there a500/a1200's in the loft along with the spectrum/c64/snes and went
and bought pcs,playstations and n64's.  No new amigas were produced to keep
up with the clock speed wars and Bob's your auntie.  So that left us, the
ones who either knew what the amiga really meant, and those that just
couldn't afford to be in the pc upgrade race.

I'm not refuting that piracy does absolutely no good what-so-ever.  The
pirates punish the companies that cared enough about the amiga to stick
around when everyone else was jumping ship.

I fit myself into both categories.  I bought an amiga around the early 90's
becuase my friends had them and I could get games from them.  I spent those
years and many more on state benefit and couldn't afford to buy every new
thing that came out.  I'm not ashamed of this.  Although being caught for
shop lifting Alien Breed Tower Assualt from Virgin wasn't a high point in
my life.  Over the years, as all my friends bought pc's and marvelled how
easy it was to install a game that their friends had bought, I stuck with
the Amiga and actually found ways of upgrading my a1200 slowly.  I used to
partake in clinical drug trials which enable me to buy accelerators and
extra memory etc.  By this time, I didn't know anyone in my area with an
Amiga and couldn't get any software apart from the odd thing in Game or EB.
I came to university a couple of years ago and with two years of student
loans I upgraded to a ppc, gfx card, decent monitor and just after xmas
os3.5.  I saw his as essential.  I've tried to keep up with things.  But
I've still got shit loads of pirated software on my hard drive from years
ago.  I think the only legal thing I've got is StormC v3 dsk (180), and a
registered copy of Thor.  I'm not proud of the fact, and as soon as I get a
job I'll start the slow process of registering all my shareware and buying
legit copies of the stuff I use.  Basically I'll try to do my bit.

I'm not entirely sure where I was going with that, but I hoped to show that
it's not as black and white as a lot of people make out.  And to get back
to my initial point.  If there had been an Amiga company for the past 4-5
years (or however long it's been), I feel the user base would be much
bigger now!  Pirates and all!

RAM, what type, SCSI or not (there is a 50-pin array in one of the

It's a Mark III.  The BBOAHW (amigaworld.freeserve.co.uk) had some
limited info about it.  The MMU is built into the '030 processor.

Yep, I've had it in pieces for the past couple of days; when I went to

I did exactly the same when I got my OS3.5. If you want to partion anew like
I did then reformat and alter your partitions. Install your old OS. I then
had to install my IDE fix so it could recognise my set up(mainly the cd).
Then simply install your new OS.

I personally chose the Power tower, well made, looks good and not to big.
Try and get the best accelerator you can afford (maybe 2nd hand?). Blizzard
1260/50 if you can. This can have an extra 32meg added later with the SCSI

Not a chance in hell, I'm sorry to say. Those pins are really, really
delicate.  I had a few snapped off in mine at the start of last year.  The
cheapest quote I got for repairs was 50 quid all in, it'd be cheaper just
to go out and buy another A1200.

Depends.  It seems to differ between machines.  For example, my Apollo
040/40 plus PowerPort Junior are fine on my 1D4, but for other people they
seems to have problems.  For a PPC card, you'd probably want to get it
fixed just in case.

The instructions are on aminet somewhere, I forget the name.  It'll be in
the hard/hack directory.

Yep, I bought one yesterday (17/2/2000) and I'm delighted with it. Make sure
you get an adaptor for the lead supplied that changes it from a 9pin to 25pin
so it can be plugged into the miggy's serial port, I got mine from the local
Tandy's. As for software to transfer over the images get dc210wizard12.lha in
comm/misc on Aminet, nothing flashy but it gets the images across to your
hard drive.

The PIII might be able to blow it away (integer performance) but the

will slow it down.  Just imagine what this sort of speed (with Altivec)
could be done on the Amiga if multitasking comes into play :)  Just

what a decent OS (like OS3.5+ PPC etc.) can achieve especially when it

so efficient.  I cannot wait.  S*d the PeeCee, the Amiga is muuuucccch

Hello,all

Seen something earlier this evening that suprised me. My next door neighbor
just fired up his new PIII 500 odd mhz and went to a web page I visited
last night. I can honestly say it was literally only a couple of seconds
quicker than my set up in laying out the page. His was better resolution(im
only in hi res as i havent put my gfx card in yet) but not by that much. It
suprised me.

Anyhow, I did the best thing and bought a Playstation(for the
kids-honest!)and spent the money I was going to use on a P.C on upgrading
my miggy.

Yep, I second that one. Voyager is far quicker than IE4/5. I use ISDN2
(64K) at work
and loading pages using IE5 are not much quicker, if at all. When using
 my P200
at home (I need Java to enter some sites such as Korg) it is much
slower.
My mate from work could not believe how quick the miggy was.(PPC 240 -
BVision)

It's hardly surprising is it? Shops don't do giveaways without

I wasn't "worried" about it, it's just a plain fact. I'm not going

Oh hell, the amount of times I have thrown my teddy bear into the corner at

Hi

Just started to have a play with PCX on AFCD50.  I have PC Task already.
I use a dedicated partition for it, with Win 3.1 and DOS 5.  I can't get
PCX to pick up the partition though.  Does PCX use some different way
of
formatting the partition (not quite sure if that's the right concept!).

It will boot from a floppy, but I can't change to c: for example. It
says there's no
such beast.

Anyone else here use both with the same partition?  How?

i have been using shapeshifter for ages and have a dedicated partition
for it but since buytioing the latest af and afcd i would like to try
out fucion to see if it is as good as shapeshifter is, but... the
problem is that whilst shapeshifter can recoqnise a partition that is
not automatically mounted by dos fusion can not and i hate havig an
ugly dh2:$|&%^ icon on my workbench can any of you increadibly helpfull
and intelligbent people help me to hide this amigados invalide disk but
still have the ability to use fusion.

sorry but i thought that i would also add a little question about
blizzkick i am having a little trouble with adding the EXTRESBUF
option, no matter how i structure the command line the applypatch
program refuses to accept it when  creating a ro file.  any help would
be fan dabby dosy, also can the prepareemul and fusionreserve options
be used together-ive had no luck

the amiga is dead, so live the AMIGA.

Yeah, definitely.  GNU/Linux has all you need for networking.

I suggest trying out some Amiga Samba software and using Linux's Samba
networking.  Another option is to have two 'networks' to the Linux
machine (have the Win98 PeeCee's connected using Samba).
You could try a parallel network to the Linux box from your Amiga.

I know there's some bottleneck in using the Amiga's PCMCIA port but I
don't know how much.

You could have the script refer adverts from doubtful addresses for
moderation before adding them. You could also check the script for
certain words or phrases and moderate those.

stuff.But even

1995?  You`re kidding?  Take a look at Alive`s catalogue, or Fore-matt`s
advert in AF... oh fancy that, you can`t look at Fore-matt`s advert in
this months mag cos they are no longer advertising (probably cos they
don`t get enough response).  Most of the stock listed is pre 1995, and
there`s probably not enough space to print their full list either.

I reckon it would archive down quite substantially.  OK, so some of the
regular stuff might of had to be postponed but it`s not as if there`s
loads of reader stuff anymore, and there`s not always a commercial s/w
demo.  And the Web sites take up a lot of space.  It`s doable.  At a
push.

The reasons why I mentioned your EMC CD as a possibility was because of
your links to AF in the past as you mentioned.  I also could not
conceive you producing a follow up given the current climate and the,
IMO, somewhat specialist (DTP orientated) nature of your CD.

I have (via AF) phase 1 and 2.  I don`t wish to sound horrible, but I
have never used anything from them.  I`m sure the clip art, images and
fonts etc. are a very good collection, but they are of no interest to me
and neither would phase 3.

Personally, it`s a game and curiosity; try and guess from the clues.  I
strongly believe that full price software should not be given away free,
whether it be games (e.g. UFO) or full priced programs (e.g. Imagine,
C4D).  I was going to suggest Lightwave instead of phase 3, but changed
my mind at the last minute cos as much as I`d love LWv5, including it on
the AFCD would kill Imagine.  The phase series was the first thing to
pop into mind.

This is despicable, and I`m sorry if my bringing up of phase 3 brought

Sorry, I disagree.  IMO it was very much established by the arrival of
Doom on the PC.  Everybody wanted to play it, the PC could, the Amiga
couldn`t.  People were left with a choice to spend a *massive* amount of
money on their Amiga, which everyone was saying would never be able cope
with a Doom style game, or spend it on a PC which would be compatible
with school/work and could play Doom too.

With the trouble at Commodore surfacing at a similar time, many decided
on the PC instead of on an already dying system.  It`s much more upgrade
friendly (i.e. one step at a time) and with games like Doom, results
witnessed with every purchase.  On the other hand, the new A1200 did
not encourage you to upgrade, not even for a hard drive (warrantees
invalidated if you opened them for example).  Gfx cards have only
recently become mainstream.

Who`s going to buy new Amiga software?  I bought every version of
Wordworth, from v1.0 to v5.  However I did not buy v6 or v7 because I
did not think they added enough to justify the high upgrade price.
Besides, v5 did everything I wanted.  Same with PFS v2.  And since I
have Ww I don`t buy the inferior Amiga Writer.  Lack of new users makes
a massive difference.

I still buy games now, even though I have 3 that I haven`t even played
once yet (Civ, Capital Punishment and Final Odyssey), but I don`t buy
many because I don`t have much time and I have many great games that I`m
only half way through, but were dropped to play my latest purchase -
Hired Guns, Settlers, History Line, Napalm, Quake, T-zero...

Wordworth, ProData, Final Calc, Vista Pro, TurboPrint, C4D....  Just off
the top of my head.  And that excludes virtually every game I`ve bought.
This is a great way of buying s/w.

I have some trouble using STRICQ... mainly, I cannt get myself an UIN.
Im using the latest beta off the owlnet site. The error message window
tells me the progrma establishes a connection tot eh Mirabilis site
with no trouble, but according to the activity window my request never
gets acknowledged. The main window just says "logging in..."

I dont get ANY errors at all. Help?

Since I'm back, I may as well do a bit of plugging... ;)

I've started a new web site called the Amiga Resource, you can find it
at http://www.amigaresource.org

The intention is that it's to take over from where the AWD left off,
only without the news section - there are at least three other sites
that carry news and ATM, a daily Amiga news section would be too much
for me to cope with, although it hasn't been ruled out for the future
(Phil, are you here and reading this?)

I have to be honest and say that it is still "work in progress", so
still lacks some features/content ATM, but I'm doing as much as I can,
when I can.

Anyhoo, the links database *desperately* needs new links! It currently
has 72 links (60-ish of which I've added myself), so if you have an
Amiga related homepage, or know of a link that you think should be in
there, please take the time to add them!

I would also appreciate any comments, ideas or any other sort of
feedback that you may have. Please take the time to help make this site
a success and worth the many hours of work that I've put into it
(whether it looks like it or not... ;) ).

Hi everyone,

I might waffle a bit here (2.00am - 2 bottles of wine - Freddie mercury
tribute video playing) the bit where Extreme come on:-)) but I'll say it
anyway....
I'm a bit sad when it comes to computers, I have 3 Pc's and 2 Amigas.
The Best of the Pc's is a PII 450, with all the usual toot these things need
to work, one of the Amigas is an A1200 PPC/060 Zip/64mb Ram, Blah de Blah
and so on. The other Amiga Is an old A4000 040 desktop with 16mb ram a cd
and hard drive running on an old Commodore 1084st Monitor. And as one of my
old mates used to say this old A4000 goes like a bastard,
it loads faster, surfs faster, crashes less and just feels "RIGHT". Apart
from super duper games it does everything the other machines do but in a
smoother more responsive way.

I don't know if any of this makes any sense. I left the Amiga scene 3 years
ago and went PC. It wasn't until I came back with a basic 2nd hand A1200 and
6 mb ram/40MB hd/14mhz that I realised that a lot of the power that Pc's
have, is there because it has to be... lets face it the bloody things would
struggle to run the operating system, 1 game and 1 app on anything less than
64mb ram, 3D card 2.1 gig hd and PII350. Even the best of the Pc's doesn't
feel as responsive as the 40 puny Mhz A4000.

well That's enough ranting for now, I will just close with a good will
message....... Go for it Bill and Fleecy, I need something better on my desk
at work than the crashnastybangbollockitsfallenoveragain that I have to put
up with at the moment.

Oh yeah and Extreme were bloody good in the Freddie tribute.

Thanks for your kind words Nick, but I think that you underestimate the
sheer number of powerful folk at Future who cut their teeth on AF and would
also hate to see it go under. Of course, it's us that does all the hard
work... :)

There's a limit to how big you can make a mag that's saddle stitched. The
greater the number of pages, the more misaligned they get, but I do like
the quality of the cover now - it's much nicer than the greasy stuff we
used to use and I'd like to keep it.

There have been problems registering with some versions - make sur eyou
have the VERY latest one from the site, and if you still have problems,
take them to the Stricq mailing list =2E=2E=2E info on the web site =2E=2E=

Your mailserver tried to connect to their mail server and failed. So it
put the mail to the back of the queue and got on with the rest. Every
few minutes it would try your mail again. After four hours it thinks you
may be wondering why you haven't had a reply, so it sends you a warning
message. You'd get another after 24 and 46 hours with the server finally
admitting defeat after 72 hours. These figures can change but are
commonly used.

Just be thankful it doesn't use a Post Office system, where it tries to
connect to the server, gives it five milliseconds to answer then shoves
a card through the door and legs it.

I have checked the iMac marketing with interest, our local PC World has
the same half dozen mark ones it bought in a year ago. Every couple of
months they swap one of them to a local Dixons store where it still
doesn`t sell. Now Mac are pushing the home video market in their
advertising but I reckon it won`t help them.

The current situation has not exactly come as a surprise and I think
Amiga users need to be more objective.

I remember taking two business friends to the 1998 London Amiga show
with a view to investing extensively in several units plus software for
business purposes. We watched in disbelief as that dreadful group
(Annex) mimed to a faulty CD player. After several false starts they
managed to not quite keep time for three minutes. We realised right
then that any product - no matter how good - which would put its name
to such a performance was doomed and we spent the money elsewhere.

Compare this to last year's Hi Fi show, which featured the world class
Acoustic Mania (live not miming,) and the breathtaking Grattan
presentation at last year's PMA photographic exhibition at Olympia. You
never get a second chance to make a first impression.

The whole discussion is now academic, as the opportunity to resurrect
the classic Amiga has now passed. However, it should be noted that
those people, like myself, who were critical of the phoney
presentations and lousy marketing were not trolling or putting the
knife in but could see the inevitable.

LOL! Too slow at running what? If you were forever waiting for the
newest and fastest processors, graphics chips, etc to be used on the

I have an amiga and a PC. They are both computers and they do computer
tasks.

I stopped buying any Amiga mags last year because I have grown tired of
the space devoted to having a go at other platforms and sneering at
people who still use A500s. I have several Amigas, several pcs and
three old 8-bit machines. (Sharp MZ series.) I use them all and don't
wear an anorak.

Hi there

I was hoping that some one can help me I`am trying to play the videos that are
on some music cds I have MooVid (Plays AVI & MOV) but when I stick a cd in it
want let me open the cd up to play the film.
Please help me because I`ve got some No Doubt & Sublime videos I`m desperate
to watch.

Hello.  What filesystem have you mounted for the CD?  Are you able to open
the CD and look at the contents from Workbench?  If not, you might have CD
filesystem problems ...

What error message do you get? What goes wrong? It would help if you
gave us a bit more info...

Is this a Freeserve account that you're having a problem with? Did you
enter the complete domain name as your user/login name, e.g.,
glenn1000.freeserve.co.uk and not just glenn1000?

Seriously, I've never noticed any "having a go" at other platforms, at
least not unless it's justified ;) Why *shouldn't* Amiga Format point
out the superiorities of the Amiga over other platforms? Surely that's
why it's there, to provide the user with information about our
machines, and to promote the computer which provides them with a
living. But I don't think it's done too often, and both AF and the
"other" magazine also report news from other areas of the computing
world. I don't think there's too much fanaticism in either magazine.

As for "sneering at people who still use A500s", I don't think that's
true either. But they (quite rightly imo) don't provide information
for A500s anymore, since it is an ancient obsolete computer system.
That's not sneering, it's a fact. They don't review software that will
run on A500s because there is very little released these days. CU said
it best in their last issue, "Please, get real, get a decent computer,
and get a %@*&ing life".

The fact that you've stopped buying Amiga mags makes me think you
don't really care what happens to the Amiga in the future anyway.

Well, since you're obviously a man of taste... :)
When you put the CD in the drive what happens? Do you get an icon on
your desktop? Do you know what CD filing system you're using, and are
you sure it can recognise enhanced music CDs?

Some Quicktime or AVI movies may be encoded in a way that can't yet be
read by any Amiga software. But if you can't even read the CD, it
doesn't sound like this is the problem.

Really need more details before I can help you :)

I've got some more questions for ya...

-Why is there a 1inch black border on the left hand side in Multisync
scrnmodes e.g. Dblpal?
-Why are interlaced modes e.g. Pal 640*512 still interlaced?  I thought
Multisync monitors could display practically any resolution, flicker-free?
-Why is the RAD dosdriver now deciding to use Chip mem instead of Fast mem?

Thanks for the reply.    I can open normal cds like the AF & audio CDs on
worbench it`s just the ones with film files on them that I can not open I
don`t even get a icon symbol.

Hi All

Thought this might interest a few of you.

Telewest are doing a new Internet offer through their ISP. You pay 10 a
month for the Internet account, but get free calls to the ISP 24 hours a
day, seven days a week if you use a Telewest phone line.

I've just signed up, and am having a Telewest phone line fitted (I'm keeping
my BT line for voice calls, as with my Sky discount the call charges are
even cheaper than cable), which I will use as a dedicated line for Internet
dial-up and faxes.

Installation of a Telewest phone line is only 9.99, even if they have to
hook up a complete new connection rather than switch over a BT line. Monthly
line rental is 9.00, against about 9.30 for a BT line. Call charges are
pretty much the same.

The catches:
You need to be in a Telewest cabled area
You can only access the service using a Telewest phone line, and it has to
be from a single specified phone number
You need to spend an additional 10 a month on normal chargeable calls.
However, if you don't make any chargeable calls they just charge you 10 or
the difference of 10 if you've made some calls but not enough to cover it.

Basically, if you add it all up, including the monthly phone line rental,
the monthly subscription and the minimum call spend, I'm getting 24hour free
dial-up Internet access for 29 a month, which is cheaper than the BT
Surftime package will be (Minimum 34.99 a month), and cheaper than the
Freetime Unlimited package that my current ISP ClaraNet offers (49.99 a
month).

The Cable Internet service is good (They have buckets of bandwidth), but you
don't get much in the way of frills - though you can easily do without them
in exchange for free calls.

Cable Internet service spec:
5 mailboxes, 3 aliases on each
5Mb Free Web Space (full CGI scripting, ftp access, mail services, perl5 and
on-demand access statistics)
0845 Tech Support (9am - 9pm)
20:1 Modem ratio
